To Marry a Muslim or Follow Christ?

Dear Friend,
The gospel changes everything. Do you believe that?
Before I really understood how the gospel could change my life and my forever with God, I could already see what it did in others. I saw strong marriages, loving families, kind neighbors, honest workplaces, and fair laws. When people follow Jesus—even when they mess up—it shapes the world around them.
But have you ever thought about what life would be like without any Christians around? More than 3 billion people live that way today. They spend their whole lives in towns and villages where there are no Christians, no churches, no Bibles—and no hope.
This is why Christ still calls us to the nations.
When missionaries go, they don’t just tell people about Jesus—they show His power in the way they live. And people notice.
ABWE missionary Joan Schmitz saw this happen while working with a 16-year-old girl in The Gambia, a small Muslim country in West Africa where few people have heard the gospel.
“I had been praying for the Lord to show me who I should work with, and he burdened my heart for Fatou,” Joan said.
Hard times at home pushed Fatou to look for truth outside the Qur’an. So Joan started a Bible study for Fatou and two other young women in her living room. Each lesson taught them more about Jesus. At first, Fatou struggled with how Christianity was different from Islam.
“How can you say Jesus is God’s Son? That’s blasphemy!” she exclaimed.
On Easter weekend, Joan showed the girls a video. It explained that no amount of good deeds can save you—only faith in Jesus can. As soon as it ended, Fatou said, “I want to accept Jesus as my Savior.” Then she prayed a beautiful, heartfelt prayer and gave her life to Christ.
Her new faith was tested right away. The Muslim young man she was dating asked her to marry him. Fatou struggled with what to do, so she went to Joan for advice.
“I can’t marry him,” she determined. “I can’t give up my faith.”
She broke off the relationship and started nursing school, following where God was leading her to serve others in The Gambia.

Missionaries like Joan keep showing people what it looks like to live for God. They share the gospel and help new believers stand strong in hard places. But there just aren’t enough missionaries yet to reach everyone who still hasn’t heard.
People can’t hear about Jesus unless someone goes to tell them (Romans 10:14–15). That’s why ABWE started the Global Gospel Fund—to send new workers out into the harvest.
This summer, we’d love for you to join us in sending these missionaries. It costs $6,500 to find, prepare, and train each new worker for the long road ahead. Every gift to the Global Gospel Fund helps us send these workers out—so they can share the good news of Jesus with people who have never heard it and never seen how the gospel changes lives, families, and whole communities.
You can be the reason one more missionary reaches the field this year. Thank you for your partnership.
In Christ,
Paul L. Davis
