The Position
Do you have a degree in special education or an allied health profession (occupational therapy, physical therapy or speech language pathology?) Do you have experience working with people with special needs at work, in your community, or in your church? You may be the person God is preparing to join our team as we help Hungarian churches create ministries for people with disabilities. As a member of ABWE Team Hungary, your day-to-day activities may include the following:
- Working closely with a local church or church plant to provide care, support, and Bible teaching to people with disabilities and their families.
- Getting involved in the disability community in your city as you build relationships and assess local needs.
- Assisting with annual Night to Shine events as part of local Hungarian churches.
- Planning and executing other special events or summer ministries for people with disabilities.
- Learning Hungarian
- Helping with other Team Hungary ministries and local church ministries as time allows.
The Need
Hungary was established as a Christian Kingdom by the pope around AD 1000, but today, only a tiny minority of Hungarians attend evangelical Protestant churches, or have a personal relationship with Jesus. After years of communism, Hungary emerged in the mid to late 1990s as a country of rapid development and economic growth. Since then, corruption, an aging population, and other factors have contributed to a current sense of frustration and uncertainty for many Hungarians. The Hungarian church has felt this as well, with fewer than 300 Baptist churches serving a population of nearly 10 million people.
The Impact
The opportunity to reach nonbelievers in Hungary is great. Hungarian people are looking for hope and love that can only be found in Jesus Christ. ABWE Team Hungary focuses on empowering Hungarians and Hungarian churches to reach their communities with the love of Christ. In a country where few resources exist to care for people with disabilities and their families, ABWE’s Team Hungary is working to help Hungarian churches provide help and hope to people made in God’s image.
