INSTRUCTOR

  • Steve Winget, MDiv in Theology
  • Veteran ABWE missionary appointed in 1992
  • Lived in Budapest, Hungary and served primarily across central and eastern Europe, the middle east, and central Asia as theological educator and church planting mentor (1994-2021)
  • He presently serves at IHQ on the Training and Resource Team.
  • Steve is married to Dr Cheryl Winget who functions as ABWE’s International MK Education Coordinator.
  • Steve and Cheryl have two grown children and four grandsons.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

OT Survey is designed to present to the student the broad sweep of OT events and the theological framework which the OT presents. The course will consist primarily of lecture and discussion, while outside assignments will consist primarily of reading and listening/viewing multimedia resources.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the historical flow of the OT through discussion and response on examinations.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the key introductory data for each book of the OT through discussion and response on examinations.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the role and key terminology of the major covenants of the OT through discus-sion and response on examinations.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the basis and means of salvation in the OT through discussion and response on examinations.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the Messianic hope presented in the OT through discussion and response on examinations.
  • The student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of, and appreciation for, the role of the prophet, priest and king of the OT through discussion and response on examinations.

COURSE SCHEDULE

Part 1

  • Monday, Feb 27 – Saturday, March 3
  • 09:00 – 13:00 Eastern Time
  • Friday, March 24, 2023 (midnight) Exam 1 postmarked for return to the instructor

Part 2

  • Monday, April 3 – Friday, April 7
  • 09:00 – 13:00 Eastern Time
  • Saturday, May 13 (midnight) Exam 2 postmarked for return to the instructor

EXAMS

  • Exams will be objective (True/False, Matching, Multiple Choice) and comprehensive (i.e., Exam 1 will cover all the materials discussed online as well as the salient points of the collateral reading in Part 1, and Exam 2 will cover all the materials discussed online as well as the salient points of the collateral reading in Parts 1 and 2).
  • The student will be allowed a maximum of 2 hours to complete the exam then sign and seal it in a previously stamped and address envelope for posting by the proctor.

PROCTOR REQUIREMENT

Each student should make arrangements to have an approved adult proctor witness the student’s examination. Ideally, this proctor should be a fellow church member (not a relative) who will be able to sign a statement to the effect that:

  • the proctor downloaded and printed a copy of the exam
  • the proctor maintained the integrity of the examination process and only presented the examination to the student at the agreed upon time and place when the exam was taken
  • the proctor remained in the immediate presence of the student while the student was taking the exam
  • the proctor sealed the completed examination in a pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelope provided by the student
  • the proctor, along with the student, co-signed the sealed of the envelope
  • the proctor posted the examination envelope by the postmark deadline

PRIMARY READING

Pt 1 OT books of Genesis – Ezra

  • The student will be required to carefully and conscientiously read the entire Old Testament during the allotted time for the course. The student will be asked to report on the primary reading assignment on each exam. On Exam 1 he will respond with a “Yes” or “No” to the following question, “Between the date you registered for this course and Fri, Mar 03, 2023, have you carefully and conscientiously completed the following reading assignment: Genesis – Ezra ?”

Pt 2 OT books of Nehemiah – Malachi

  • On Exam 2 he will respond with a “Yes” or “No” to the following question, “Between the date you registered for this course and Fri, May 26, 2023, have you carefully and conscientiously completed the following reading assignment: Nehemiah – Malachi?”

COLLATERAL READING / VIEWING

  • The student will be asked to report on his collateral reading assignment on each exam in similar fashion as the primary reading.

GRADING

  • The student’s final grade for this course will be determined by his cumulative score on two exams. Reporting on the primary and collateral reading / viewing assignments will be incorporated into the exams.
  • There will be several secondary reading and listening/viewing assignments which will contribute toward successful scoring on exams. These materials will be sent to each student electronically along with a schedule for their completion.

EXPECTATIONS

The student can expect the teacher to:

  • be eager for him to succeed in the course, not only by achieving an excellent grade for the course, but by having had a genuinely beneficial learning experience in which he profited mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and socially
  • do his best to understand the student’s questions and respond with helpful answers which hopefully will stimulate further thought, exploration, and growth
  • pray for himself and each student that the above expectations will be realized

The teacher will expect each student to:

  • log in to class (and return from breaks) on time and remain alert and interactive through-out class time
  • arrive to class with Bible, class notes, and all necessary writing utensils
  • thoroughly learn the Old Testament timeline as given in the class notes
  • learn the order and spelling of books of the Old Testament in English
  • extend his best effort to focus on the material at hand, to encourage classmates to focus, and discourage any distractions or interruptions during class
  • approach this course with prayer that the instructor will be able to communicate well, understand & reply cogently to the students’ questions, and that teacher and student alike will grow spiritually as a result of their studies together
