The Position
If sitting across the table from someone, warm drink in hand, and asking just the right questions to draw them out and get them talking sounds like the perfect way to spend your day, God might be preparing you to serve Him and His church in Hungary. We’re looking for native English speakers who love Jesus and people and who want to spend their time with Hungarians, building relationships that will lead to gospel conversations. Your day-to-day activities may include the following:
- Teaching group English classes to children or adults as a means of outreach and relationship building, always connected to a local national church or church plant.
- Meeting with individuals for one-on-one or small group English lessons or Bible studies.
- Helping plan and coordinate English courses and summer English camps.
- Learning Hungarian.
- Helping with other Team Hungary ministries and local church ministries as time allows.
The Need
Hungary was established as a Christian Kingdom by the pope around AD 1000, but today, only a tiny minority of Hungarians attend evangelical Protestant churches, or have a personal relationship with Jesus. After years of communism, Hungary emerged in the mid to late 1990s as a country of rapid development and economic growth. Since then, corruption, an aging population, and other factors have contributed to a current sense of frustration and uncertainty for many Hungarians. The Hungarian church has felt this as well, with fewer than 300 Baptist churches serving a population of nearly 10 million people.
The Impact
The opportunity to reach nonbelievers in Hungary is great. Hungarian people are looking for hope and love that can only be found in Jesus Christ. ABWE Team Hungary focuses on empowering Hungarians and Hungarian churches to reach their communities with the love of Christ. Because Hungarians feel that language learning is vital to their success in life and work, we have found teaching English to be an effective tool to reach people who wouldn’t normally walk into a church. As native English-speakers, we are able to offer this needed skill as we come alongside our national partners. Will you consider if God is calling you to come join us in Hungary?
