When Jesus saw the crowds in the cities and villages near Jerusalem, he observed their vulnerability and was moved with compassion. In verse 36, he compared the Jewish people to sheep without a shepherd, lost and helpless. Here, he shifts the metaphor from flock to field with a startling observation. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Imagine a corn field ready to be harvested without enough workers to bring it in. The amount of waste is horrifying. Now imagine a spiritual field where souls are ready to be harvested without enough workers to bring them in. Sadly, we don’t have to imagine this. This is our current reality.
Since the time Jesus spoke these words, the church has recognized the need for more laborers. We’re praying for God to send men and women into global ministries. The need is urgent as billions of people still have not heard the gospel.
This week, let’s pray:
Lord, help Your church to send enough workers to meet the demands of the harvest. We pray this in the name of Jesus in obedience to your word.
