Janie Cockrell, wife of the late Dr. Al Cockrell, who served as a long-standing board member and two-time interim president of ABWE, entered the presence of her Savior this week at the age of 83. Born on May 16, 1941, and originally hailing from Commerce, Oklahoma, she most recently resided in Hampstead, North Carolina.
On June 24, 1961, Janie married Al, and together they celebrated 60 years of marriage, marking a lifetime of devotion to one another and to God’s work. They faithfully served the Lord, raising three sons—Brek, Jonathan, and Thad—and embracing their growing family, which includes six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
As a ministry partner, Janie exemplified the heart of a servant zealous for the work of the Lord. She and Pastor Al faithfully led congregations in Kansas City, Missouri; Tampa, Florida; and Buffalo, New York, leaving an indelible impact on each community. During their time at The Chapel in Buffalo from 2000 to 2006, Janie’s nurturing spirit and steadfast faith were pivotal in shepherding the congregation through significant transitions.
Janie’s life was a testament to unwavering faith, compassion, and hospitality. Her bold demeanor, steadfast support of her husband’s calling, and Christlike love inspired all who knew her. Her legacy of faithfulness to the Lord’s work will endure for generations to come.
Reflecting on Janie’s impact, ABWE President Paul Davis shared, “Martha and I would not be serving at ABWE apart from Al and Janie. Janie’s sincere encouragement and vibrant personality were a constant source of inspiration to us in our ministry.”
Martha Davis shared, “Janie’s zest for life and ministry were contagious. People were drawn to her authenticity and penchant for speaking the truth in love. She was a true role model as an encourager and discipler of women who will be greatly missed.”
She is preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Alan Cockrell, who passed away in February 2022. She is survived by her sons, Brek, Jonathan, and Thad; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends who will cherish her memory.
