You should never have to treat a two-year-old for a gunshot wound. But there the toddler lay, bleeding and scared—struck in the hand by the bullet that also killed her father.
While fleeing Myanmar with thousands of Rohingya refugees, Chesa’s* family had been brutally attacked by members of the Buddhist government army.
By the time Chesa* crossed the border into Bangladesh and found treatment at Memorial Christian Hospital (MCH), only her mother and one of her five siblings remained. The others had been separated and were unaccounted for, and the family had lost everything they owned.
The medical staff at MCH lavished compassion and kindness on Chesa and her grieving mother, showing them love and sharing the hope found in Christ.
Unfortunately, Chesa isn’t the only child impacted by this conflict. News reports state that more than 730 children were killed while fleeing the attacks. Many more have been injured.
Since August, our colleagues serving at Memorial Christian Hospital have faced extreme and heartbreaking tragedy. With more than 1-million Rohingya refugees flooding into camps outside the hospital gates, medical staff have worked tirelessly to provide physical and spiritual care for this once unreachable Muslim-minority people group—who now sit at our doorstep.
Our teammates at MCH are living out their faith—healing the sick, caring for the poor and preaching the Gospel to all who come. The Rohingya, who historically reviled Christianity, now call the hospital staff “The Christians” as a term of respect.
Recently I visited several countries throughout South Asia and saw the ministries of our teams first-hand. The work at MCH is a powerful example of how showing the love of Christ in practical ways—especially to people in crisis—can open the door for sharing the Gospel.
Our desire is to grow and invest in frontline ministries like these—where acts of compassion and the message of the Gospel join together to change lives.
